The History of North Cyprus

According to the various informations of the ancient times, the man settled to the region by migrating from Europe and Asia. The North Cyprus island was the landowner of the civilizations like Hittites, Egyptians and Archaic Greeks. After the Cyprus was invaded by the Roman Empire in 58 B.C., the island was under the rule of the Roman Empire nearly for 350 years. But then Cyprus was taken by the Byzantine Empire in 395 B.C. so their religion changed to the Christianity .

Richard settled to the island during the Crusades in 1191 and then sold the island to the Templar Knights. Guy de Lusignan bought the island in1192. Cyprus was governed by the Lusinian until Venetians took the island under rule in 1489.

Ottoman Empire invaded the island in 1571 and the Ottoman Empire was leased for the sake of the agreement that was signed among the Britian and Ottoman Empire. When the Ottoman Empire joined the First World War with Germany, the island was annexed by Britian in 1925 and became the English colony. North Cyprus Turks and Greeks founded the North Cyprus Republic in 1960. But the Greeks tried to change the law constitution unilaterally in 1963 so there was a disagreement among the both sides and North Cyprus Turks was spreaded from the North Cyprus Republic. Nearly 103 North Cyprus villages were left and North Cyprus Turks were compelled to live in the 3% of North Cyprus. Both the reason of the islands conjoining to Greek in 1974 and the pulse with the support of the Greek, Turkey stepped in the island. After the intervention, the island was divided in to two seperate regions as the North where the North Cyprus Turks live and as the South where the Greeks live in.Northern Cyprus Turks founded the Turkish Federate State in 1975.

Then Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic was founded in 1983.

After 30 years, the boundary gates among the North and South were opened in April 2003. Northern Cyprus Turks accepted the Annan Plan related to the idea of combining the island in April 24, 2004. But the Sourthern Greeks rejected the plan. Greek side has been the member of the Europe Union by symbolizing the whole island under the name of Northern Cyprus Republic in May 1, 2004.
