Bufavento Castle

Bufavento Castle, with St. Hilarion and Kantara Castle, is the part of a chain of the warning system which was composed for the aim of defending the island against Arabians. The castle was built on a windy hill, “Bufavento” word which means “ not afraid of the wind” was given to the castle. Although the exact building time was not known, the time of lion hearted Richard’s invasion of Cyprus is thought. According to some rumor, the daughter of Isac Commenus who declares himself as the king of Cyprus went out of this castle and surrendered to Richard. As the other castles’ stories, Bufavento has a story related to the Queen who reigned in Cyprus once upon a time. There was a story related to Byzantine Princess and her dog that caught into the leprous illness when Cyprus was in the reign of Templar Knights. Princess and her dog were kept in the castle. Then princess realized that the skin of her dog was getting beter and one day, princess saw her dog while it was bathing in a source beside of the castle. So princess went to this source and had a bath. After she had recovered wholly, she made the Ayios Ionnis Chrysostomos Monastery built instead of the source.

The castle was used as a prison among 1382-1398. The name of the castle was Lion Castle in this term. When the island was in the reign of Venetians in 1489, the castle lost its old importance. Venetians gave importance mostly to the castles on the sea sides.

Then it is observed that a castle and a monastery were built in 10. century. St. Hilarion Castle which is 700 m. High from the sea level was built on a twins point. Although the certain building date of the castle is unknown, it is known that the castle was built for the aim of keeping and contolling of the island from the Arabian invasions came from north in 10 A.C. However it is suggested that it is modern with Bufavento, Kantara and Kyrenia Castles. The information about the castle which suggests that the island is a Byzantine built and was invaded by an English King Richard in 1191 is stil valid. Although some historical resources claim about the castle that Emperor II. Frederic wanted to dominate Cyprus in 1128.

It was started with a defence place surrounded by circle walls which keeps the main entrance. There was a place of monastery and Saint’s place in the Middle Castle. There were palace rooms, king palace and kitchen in the Higher Castle. The Venetians demolished the castle because they had no power to keep the castle to hinder the invasion of the castle by Ottoman Empire. After that event the castle was not used for the military aim until 1964. after the invasions of Greek in 1964, Turkish freedom fighters settled to the castle and kept the castle to evaluate the strategic location of the castle. Greeks set back by skimpy freedom fighters.

The castle is located in the northerneast of Kyrenia and it was dominated to the port and built on a rectangular plan. The ancient resources claim that while English King Richard The Lion-hearted attended to the third Crusader War, he overcame Cyprus King Isak Komnen and took the dominance of Cyprus. The certain building date of the island has not been established up to now but the researches made around the castle shows that the castle was built in III. and II. Centuries B.C.

It is supposed that the Kyrenia Castle which is one of the rare remainders of the country was built by Byzantines to save the Kyrenia from Arabians’ lasting invasions. The castle changed by the term of Lusinian. The last form of the castle was done in the term of Venetians and it has come to now with its that form.

The residents of the castle which was surrounded by Ottoman in 1570, surrendered without using the power of the castle so they took an important role to keep the castle until now. Because of its gorgeous view and its peaceful mood, it is called as a “peace place” as it could be understood from its Latin name. The monastery in the south comes to mind when Beylerbeyi is said. The name of the monastery is derived from French words “Abbaue de la Paix” ( Peace Monastery ). It is known as one of the most beautiful examples of Near East and it is the masterpiece of the Gothic art. The place called as the “white monastery” because of the white clothes of the residents. The first residents of Bellapais are known as the Augustinian religion monks who escaped from Selahaddin Eyyubi who invaded Kudüs. The first building date of the monastery was among 1198- 1205. The biggest part of the building which is still present was built by French King III. Hugh ( 1267- 1284). After the island was taken by Ottoman, the facilities of the monastery were stopped and the church was assigned to Greek Orthodoxes. Most of the monastery became a wreck. The entrance to the monastery is done by a secret embrasured passage which is tower shaped. After the entrance, you can arrive front garden. The church takes part after there and it is well preserved with its original shape.

Famagusta is soon became one of the most important city of Northern Cyprus and wealthy cities on the North Cyprus. Around the 14 th century B.C. there were approximately 350 churches had been built within the main structure which would later be walled by the Venetians. And than the Genoese invaded and ransacked the island of CYprus leaving it void of most of its treasures in 1372. And in 1571 during a long siege conducted by the Ottoman Turks many of the historic buildings in the Famagusta were damaged by cannonballs. After that the British would use these well stones to build the other ones , Suez Canal and Quays of Port Said. The Gazi Magusa once again came under siege in 1974 but at that time with 11,000 Turkish Cypriots defending by the Greek Cypriots, the Gazi Magusa until the arrival of Turkish troops.
