Northern Cyprus city of Gazi Magusa also known as Famagusta was founded in the 3 rd century B.C. by Ptolemy Philadelphus of Egypt and it lies on the eastern edge of the Cyprus island. The holiday city city of Famagusta has gown until its inception due to the influx of refugees in 648 from Salamis and after the invasion of the Holy Lands Christian refugees . Famagusta is soon became one of the most important city of Northern Cyprus and wealthy cities on the North Cyprus. Around the 14 th century B.C. there were approximately 350 churches had been built within the main structure which would later be walled by the Venetians. And than the Genoese invaded and ransacked the island of CYprus leaving it void of most of its treasures in 1372. And in 1571 during a long siege conducted by the Ottoman Turks many of the historic buildings in the Famagusta were damaged by cannonballs. After that the British would use these well stones to build the other ones , Suez Canal and Quays of Port Said. The Gazi Magusa once again came under siege in 1974 but at that time with 11,000 Turkish Cypriots defending by the Greek Cypriots, the Gazi Magusa until the arrival of Turkish troops.
